The ECS or Endocannabinoid System is the master control system of your body whose primary objective is to maintain internal balance, or homeostasis, despite changes to our external environment. This links the ECS to many physiological processes including sleep, mood, appetite, digestion, memory, metabolism, heart function, neuro-protection, and hormones.
The ECS is comprised of three components: 1) Cell receptors, 2) Endocannabinoids and 3) Hydrolytic Enzymes. The receptors, found throughout the body – from your brain, to your liver, kidney, bones, reproductive organs, skin, etc. – receive cannabinoids, whether produced internally (endo) or supplemented externally (phyto). Once they have served their purpose, the enzymes accelerate the chemical reaction and eventually break down the cannabinoids.
Discovered in the 1990’s, the ECS is thought to be one of the most vital systems for maintaining good health. Not just for humans, but also for all mammals!
